We are officially moving into Set 2 of the DwarfVision Winter Deep Sky Challenge, and let me tell you—the results from the community for Set 1 were nothing short of legendary!

Set 2: Target 17 - the Sword of Orion. M42 Crop - DwarfVision’s mini test unit- We shot three strategic captures, then combined them to expose the Orion nebula's range of brilliance from the Trapezium core to the faintest dark tendrils of the M43 - Learn how we did it in our new guide below.

If Set 1 was about getting our bearings, Set 2 is about pushing these “Little Scopes That Could” to their absolute breaking point. We are no longer just “taking pictures”; we are building a collective launchpad of knowledge!

The Crown Jewel: The Sword of Orion

For Set 2, we tackle the ultimate showpiece of winter—but we are going to make it even more spectacular by capturing the whole sword, M42, and all!

Most people take a single shot of the Great Orion Nebula (M42) and call it a night. But we are Dwarfers. We don’t just want a snapshot; we want the Sword - Presenting Target 17 :)

This is a massive vertical mosaic spanning from the shimmering blue cluster of NGC 1981 at the top, down through the icy blue Running Man, across the majestic heart of M42, and finally to the mysterious, dark “Cosmic Keyhole” of NGC 1999 at the bottom.

DSO Set 2 T17 - The Sword of Orion - DwarfVision D3 & D-mini mosaic composite

To get this in one shot requires a perfect Mosaic strategy and a way to handle the extreme dynamic range.

If you’ve ever shot the Great Orion Nebula, you know the problem: if you see the faint dust, the core is a white blob. If you expose for the core, the nebulosity of the arms and dust are too faint to see.

The solution? An HDR (High Dynamic Range) approach: Combine separate shots of different exposure and gain settings with Post-Processing tricks designed to tame the light - jump to the bottom of this post now to unlock the PDF guide now.

A Taste of Set 2 - DSO highlights (Full Drop: January 22nd)

The full set of DSOs for Set 2 will drop on January 22nd, but here is a taste of what’s coming. I have included my own shots of each of these showpieces below. We have shot these ourselves, so we know exactly what the “battlefield” looks like for each:

Dwarf 3 + mini composite capture from 16 hrs of integration time - Learn our color trick to get this range of hues

Monkey’s Head Nebula T21 (NGC 2174 | Orion): This is an H-alpha beast.

Even though the Dwarf finds it effortlessly, the real challenge is its extreme faintness. It’s all about the integration—capturing the intricate “brain-like” nebulosity within the nebula without background noise swallowing the faint outer gases. You’ll need at least 4 hours of clean data.

Dwarf mini Rosette - Learn how to use Lightroom’s temperature features to find the rainbow hues present in the data!

The Rosette Nebula T23 (NGC 2238 | Monoceros): The Rosette is massive, and the first challenge is framing. To get the full “petals” of the rose in a single shot with a perfect field of view, your alignment must be spot on. No tabletop AltZ mode will not cut it; you've got to go EQ!

Beyond framing, the color challenge is real: how do you get the “blue” to show up? We will explore how to do this, looking at real stretches on good DuoBand data versus the “cheats” you can use when your Dwarf just didn’t capture enough raw color data.

Learn how to tame the bulging and radiating Alntiak and double-stack D3 & mini data together into an “all the dust” mosaic of the 2nd most famous Winter DSO!

The Flame & Horsehead T24 (NGC 2024 / IC 434 | Orion): Two words: Alnitak Glare.

The challenge is to bring out the dark, dusty silhouette of the Horsehead without the massive light burst from Alnitak (the brightest star in the belt) washing out so much of the best features, including the B33, the dusty black head!

The star dominates the Flame nebula as well, due to its closeness to Alnitak, making it challenging to keep the nebula bright without overexposure and losing those dark veins that make this one so distinctive.

After collecting enough data, look for the faint crimson pillars behind the nebula. Aligning your shot with these massive features adds a striking frame to your Horsehead image.

Unlock the Full Advanced HDR Blueprint for Orion’s Sword

Below the pay-line, for my paid subscribers, I have released the Full Advanced Guide for capturing the SWORD OF ORION. This is the exact blueprint I use to go from raw sensor data to the “RAW to WOW” results you see in my posts.

It’s not just applicable for M42; use it for any DSO with a bright core, such as M31, the Lagoon Nebula, the Omega, the Flame, and many more.

In the full guide, I break down:

  • Scope Setup - I deep-dive into EQ mode and show how to set it up for a perfect mosaic shot right from the app, with minimal frame errors and mosaic overlap issues.

  • In the Field- The Manual HDR Blend: How to use the 2-second core shot exposure to “un-burn” the heart of Orion, then the perfect long session shot to expose those faint outer tendrils.

  • The “Must-Do” SIRIL Quick Start: The exact file organization and “Pictures root” rule that stops 90% of stacking script failures before they start.

  • The Digital Forge: My 10-step HDR Photoshop workflow, including making the “Perfect Star-Only Layer” trick that reveals your nebula without bloating a single star.

  • Manual Mosaic Panel Stitching: What to do when the automated tools fail, and you have to hand-stitch your panels for perfect alignment.

Thank you to everyone supporting DwarfVision. Your subscriptions allow me to keep building these resources and maintaining our shared cosmic adventure.
